Thunderbird is a free alternative (e.g. Outlook Express) email program and makes emailing safer, faster, and easier, it includes features such as intelligent spam filters, RSS reader, quick search, and much more.

Installing Thunderbird
Make sure you have the latest version of Thunderbird (which you can download from http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/), once downloaded start the installer by double clicking on the Thunderbird installer icon, you should then be presented with a Screen that looks similar to this:


- Read the License Agreement and if you accept it select the option ‘I Accept the terms of the License Agreement’.
- Click Next to continue

- Select the option for a Standard setup
- Click Next to continue


- Tick the box Launch Mozilla Thunderbird 1.x.x now
- Click the Finish button
Setting up Thunderbird
When Thunderbird first opens you will be presented with a variety of wizards, these are detailed below.

- Select the option Don’t import anything
If you have previously used Outlook Express then you can use the alternate option

- Select the option Email Account
- Click the Next button to continue

- Type in your Name, e.g. David Citizen
- Type in your email address, e.g. davidcitizen@eftel.net.au
- Click the Next button to continue

- Set the type of incoming sever you are using to POP
- Type in the Incoming Server as mail.eftel.net.au
- Make sure that Use Global Inbox is ticked
- Type in the Outgoing Server as mail.eftel.net.au
- Click the Next button to continue

Setup a News Account

Note: Newsgroups are a public forum, often used for obtaining email addresses and details of people that can be used for sending unsolicited emails. It is therefore suggested that you use an Alias (rather than your real name), and a 3rd party web mail based service, e.g. www.hotmail.com so that your real email address doesn’t become clogged with spam.

- The Your Name section is the name people see when you send them an email.
- Check that your Email Address is correct, e.g. username@eftel.com
- Click on Server Settings to continue

- The server name is the last part of your email address, prefixed with mail, e.g. test@eftel.com means the mail server will be mail.eftel.com.
- Your username is your full email address, e.g. test@eftel.com
- Check that Use Secure Connection (SSL) and Use Secure Authentication are un-ticked.
- Click on Copies & Folders to continue

- Send ‘Text Only’ email by un-ticking Compose Messages in HTML Format (Optional).

News Account Settings

- In the your name, type in a nick name/alias (refer below).
- The email address you are using for newsgroups should be set here.
