Eftel - more than broadband

Below is the procedure to follow in order to upload your personal web page onto our server. This example uses a free FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program called FileZilla, version 2.6.6. We have this particular version available for download, or if you prefer you can visit their website, http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/, and download the latest version.

First you must determine your logon information from your email address which is in the form username@provider.com(.au@.com(.au)

Once completed your web page will be visible to the world via the address: http://www.provider.com/~username

Please note: The first page of your site MUST be named either "index.html", or "index.htm" for it to display automatically.

1. Connecting to an FTP server

The easiest way to use Filezilla is through the Quickconnect bar as shown below.

WP001

To connect to your EFTel webspace you will need to enter the following details into the Quickconnect bar:

Address: www.provider.com
User: username
Password: Normal email password
Port: 21

For Example
If my email address is test@eftel.com the information I would enter is:

Address: ftp.eftel.com
User: test
Password: mypassword
Port: 21

Once these details are setup, press the "Quickconnect" button to connect you to your web space.

2. Navigating on the server

After a successful connection attempt, a list of files and folders already on our server will appear on the right side of the main window (Remote Site). The current folder is listed in the 'edit' field on the top. You can change the current folder by double-clicking a folder. You will notice a folder called .. displayed in all directories. This folder allows you to go up to the parent directory of the current folder.

All website files must go into the folder called public_html, so the first thing we must do is double-click the public_html to open the folder.

3. Navigating on your machine

Next you must select the files that you want to place on your site. In the left side of the screen (Local Site), navigate to the folder on your computer that contains your files to be uploaded. The files, in the selected directory, are listed in a box below the directory tree. In our example a folder called 'images' and a file called 'index.html'.

4. Transferring files

To transfer folders and/or multiple files click once on the first file, then hold down on your keyboard and click on any other files you want uploaded - you will notice they become highlighted. Once you have selected your files, right-click the mouse on one of the highlighted items and select 'Upload' from the menu.

5. Confirming Files are Uploaded

Once your files have been uploaded they should appear on the right hand (Remote Site) side of the screen. You should be able to access your website in your browser by typing 'www.provider.com.au/~username/' in the address bar. If you uploaded a file called 'index.html' you will be presented with this page. If you didn't upload an 'index.html' you will see a file listing instead.
